Getting the Active Ingredients

In last weeks article Intro to Cannabinoids, we discussed the active ingredients that provide the relief sought by medical marijuana patients. Unlike the pharmaceutical industry that synthetically replicates the active ingredients of a compound, the goal of medical marijuana is to deliver these active ingredients in their natural form. The current intake methods of delivering these active ingredients have seen an evolution over the past few decades but at the same time have conceptually been around for centuries. We briefly introduce these intake methods in this weeks feature article to help new patients decipher the often confusing jargin within the world of medical marijuana.

Why so many methods?

There are as many intake methods for delivering cannabinoids as there are cultures that have been harvesting it for its medicinal qualities. Many of the current methods we use go back to ancient Indian traditions such as smoking Ganja or the flower, consuming it in beverage form such as Bhang, or concentrating it as Charas which is a form of hashish. Other cultures such as those in Morocco have a long history of extracting cannabinoids as hashish. Each has their own advantages and purposes which is also why all these methods are still popular today.

Smoking

The most common and recognized method of taking in medical marijuana is smoking the flower or bud. This method requires combustion and inhalation of dried and ground cannabis flowers. This is by far the most direct and simplest form of intake.................................
