AIDS (HIV) & AIDS Wasting
"AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
Acquired means that the disease is not hereditary but develops after birth from contact with a disease causing agent (in this case, HIV).
Immunodeficiency means that the disease is characterized by a weakening of the immune system.
Syndrome refers to a group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease. In the case of AIDS this can include the development of certain infections and/or cancers, as well as a decrease in the number of certain cells in a persons immune system.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus may be passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in contact with an uninfected persons broken skin or mucous membranes. In addition, infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding. People with HIV have what is called HIV infection. Some of these people will develop AIDS as a result of their HIV infection."
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated in Oct. 20, 2006 postings on its website titled "What Is AIDS?" and "What Is HIV?": "AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
Wasting can be caused by an extremely low energy intake (e.g., caused by famine), nutrient losses due to infection, or a combination of low intake and high loss. Infections and conditions associated with wasting include tuberculosis, chronic diarrhea, AIDS, and Superior mesenteric artery syndrome. The mechanism may involve cachectin - also called tumor necrosis factor, a macrophage-secreted cytokine. Caretakers and health providers can sometimes contribute to wasting if the patient is placed on an improper diet. Voluntary weight loss and eating disorders are excluded as causes of wasting.

Cannabinoid receptors give cells the tools they need to defend against HIV infection
Not a replacement for an immune system, but an extra set of hands keeping the wall up
The cannabinoids themselves don't act anti-virally. They are not responsible for killing the virus, the tissue sample takes that claim. The cannabinoids stimulate a part of the cells that bears an endogenous resemblance to the chemical structure of the cannabinioids themselves. Pairing between naturally occurring substances and receptors in the human brain works the same way as the formation of anti-bodies does; contact evokes adaptation in the receptors, causing them to bear an imprint of the experience. It is unknown if these receptors exist in cells because of the inclusion of the cannabis plant in the diets and pharmacopoeia of earlier human ancestors. In any case, receptors that are designed to respond to cannabinoids are found in the cell structure of every human. When the receptors were stimulated in the tissue culture, in rate of infection by the HIV virus was greatly impeded.

Successful studies in non-human apes
Surprisingly, at the beginning of the experimentation, the researchers had expected the application of cannabis' THC to increase the speed at which the HIV took hold, and so it came as a general shock when the cannabinoids not only didn't foster the virus' strength, but also attenuated the symptoms that are generally associated with the infection. While ethics laws prevent these tests from being conducted in humans, a nearly identical virus, which is thought to be the original source of the human immunodeficiency virus, exists in other species of great ape, called the simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV. Tests indicate that SIV is inhibited by cannabinoids, and the progression and mortality rates are greatly reduced. Brief studies on humans have been limited to verification that inhalation of cannabis smoke, on of the treatments that HIV patients may rely on for pain relief, had no noticeable detrimental effects with regards to the potency of the virus.

From the U.S. 1999 IOM Report, on Page 159:
"The profile of cannabinoid drug effects suggest that they are promising for treating wasting syndrome in AIDS patients. Nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana. Although some medications are more effective than marijuana for these problems, they are not equally effective in all patients. A rapid-onset (that is, acting within minutes) delivery system should be developed and tested in such patients. Smoking marijuana is not recommended. The long-term harm caused by smoking marijuana makes it a poor drug delivery system, particularly for patients with chronic illnesses."
(March, 1999) IOM
Dennis M. Israeliski, M.D., et. al, in their research study, "Marijuana use is associated with better adherence to ART among HIV-infected persons with moderate to severe nausea," presented at the July 2004 XV International AIDS Conference, reported:
"Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential to successful treatment of HIV-infection....
Our data suggest that medicinal use of marijuana may facilitate, rather than impede, ART adherence for patients with nausea..."

A 2/12/04 article by Reuters, "Marijuana Eases HIV-Related Nerve Pain," stated:
"For people with nerve damage that can result from HIV infection, smoking marijuana seems to relieve the pain they experience, according to the results of a small pilot study.
...In a trial, 16 HIV-infected subjects with neuropathy were given three marijuana cigarettes each day for seven days...Twelve of the 16 participants reached the [optimal] 30 percent goal in reduction of pain..."
(2/12/04) Reuters
Consumer Reports Magazine (CRM) stated, in part, in May 1997;
"Consumer Reports believes that, for patients with advanced AIDS and terminal cancer, the apparent benefits some derive from smoking marijuana outweigh any substantiated or even suspected risks."
(May, 1997) CRM
GW Pharmaceuticals stated on its website in January 2004;
"AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) wasting syndrome was a very frequent complication of HIV infection prior to the advent of protease-inhibitor drugs, and has been associated with major weight loss and cachexia, serving to further debilitate its victims, already weakened by immune system failure and opportunistic infections.
Cannabis has been a frequently employed alternative medicine for the condition, particularly in the USA, because of its reported benefits on appetite and amelioration of other AIDS symptoms."
